The new Luthor movie is out now in select UK cinemas, and if you want to catch up on The Fallen Sun series before Netflix, you’re out of luck unless you want to watch on an alternative streaming service. Why is that, and where can you watch it instead? Here’s what you need to know.
So the TL;DR of this article is that we’re unaware of any plans for the region to receive Luthor before Luthor: The Fallen Sun hits Netflix on March 10.
While the film was very early in development and had not yet been greenlit, we were told that Netflix’s deal to acquire the film was complicated and took months to get down the line. It comes to Netflix through a co-production between Chernin Entertainment (which has an overall deal with Netflix) and BBC Films.
The series is therefore still wholly owned by BBC Studios, which has already licensed the show in most countries or is not selling the show to Netflix.
It is not unusual for Netflix to be unable to obtain streaming licenses for series or films after it has acquired the rights to make sequels. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a classic example where Lionsgate still owned the rights to the first film and did not license it to Netflix in the US (although it did so in several other territories).
Of course, this could change in the weeks leading up to or shortly after release so we’ll keep you posted if it changes.
Netflix did not respond to repeated attempts to comment on the matter. Luther is streaming on Netflix in two regions.
Two Netflix regions are streaming the series at the time of publication.
According to Unogs, only two Netflix regions are streaming Luther, Netflix Switzerland and Netflix Germany. Those regions are streaming all five seasons of the show and are available in multiple audio and subtitle options.
Where is Luther’s lineage in the United States?
Despite not being available on Netflix in the US, a few venues in the US (besides a FAST service) are streaming Luther for the film’s release.
The two SVOD services currently carrying the show include Hulu (which has all five seasons) and BritBooks (which has seasons 1-4).
As for free services, Pluto TV currently airs seasons 1-3.
At one point, Luther streamed on Netflix in the US. In fact, it was available for several years, adding seasons 1-3 in September 2014 and adding season 4 in 2016 before being removed entirely in 2019.
Where to stream Luther in other regions
The show is streaming in its entirety exclusively on BBC iPlayer in the UK, naturally.
In Canada, the show is available on CBC Gem and BritBox.
In Australia, the show is available in its entirety on Stan and Britbox.
For all other regions, we’d recommend using a service like JustWatch to find out where it’s playing in your area, although BritBox is the most likely home.
